WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – Watertown’s city council decided Monday night to allow the Northern New York Community Foundation to raise money for a new skate park, but voted down a similar agreement for a dog park.
It was a unanimous decision to let the foundation serve as the fundraising power behind the skate park, which would be on Sewall’s island.
City resident Ryan Starr is spearheading this campaign. He says the city should build an all-concrete park, which lasts longer and is easier to maintain.
He says if the full amount of the funds needed aren’t raised within two years, the money will be used to make improvements to the city’s current skate park at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds.
“The sooner we get the money, the sooner this will happen, so please check it out with the folks that are involved in this, and I am pleased to see this before us so we can take a vote on it,” council member Cliff Olney said.
The council also voted 5-0 against a similar agreement that would have helped raise funds to build a dog park at Thompson Park.
Lawmakers came to a consensus that more details still need to be worked out, so they voted the resolution down.
It’s unclear when it could be brought back up again.
