Crews battle Watertown duplex fire

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – A Watertown street was closed for a time Monday morning as city firefighters battled an attic fire in a duplex.

The call for a fire at 326 North California Avenue came in a little before 8 a.m.

There was a family living in the upper apartment, but the bottom apartment was vacant. Everyone got out safely after neighbors alerted the residents of the fire and called for help.

Fire officials say the blaze originated in the attic and they had no access, so they had to cut through the ceilings and roof to extinguish it.

The upper apartment has smoke and water damage, but the bottom half of the home was spared.

The cause is under investigation.
