Saturday Sports: Hardwood & hockey on the docket

LISBON, New York (WWNY) – High school basketball was heating up this holiday weekend with a couple of boys contests on tap Saturday.

We begin in Lisbon with a boys’ non-league contest as Lisbon hosted Belleville Henderson.

Andrew Donaldson penetrates and gets his own rebound. He puts Lisbon up 2-0.

On the tap-out, it was Connor Flack all the way to the rack: 4-0 Knights.

Hayden Allen dumps back to Brandon Dodge who fires off the three: Panthers down 4-3.

Cooper Rutherford slithers to the hoop – layup plus one to make it 7-3 Lisbon.

It was Cooper again as he splashes two more. He would score a game-best 23.

Next, it was Donaldson from the same spot for two.

Peyton Bellinger finds Dodge for two of his seven points.

Coby Mills cranks up a three-pointer.

Rutherford passed to Connor Bell down low for two.

Lisbon beats Belleville Henderson 57-32.

In LaFargeville, Thousand Islands met Lyme in the LaFargeville Turkey Trot Tournament consolation game.

In the 3rd quarter, Alex Radley lays in 2 off the break: Lyme up 43-22.

The Vikings answer when Ty Doxtater goes baseline for the bucket: Vikings down 19.

Then it was Donovan Pettit with the strong move inside off glass: 43-26 Lyme.

Off the inbounds, Ethan O’Brien gets the bucket and is fouled: 45-26 Lyme.

With the Lakers running, it’s Radley with the finish.

Lyme goes on to beat Thousand Islands 60-29.

Staying on the hardwood, we continue our preview of area high school basketball teams with a stop in Sackets Harbor to check in with the Lady Patriots, a team looking to make big strides this season.

Coach Sean Haley’s team finished 6-14 overall, 3-8 in the Frontier League’s D Division in 2022-23, losing to Copenhagen in the opening round of the Section 3 Class D Playoffs.

With his top 3 scorers from last year’s team returning and another year of experience under their belts, Haley likes the prospects for this year’s group.

”I’m real excited about this year’s team. They’re playing real hard right now. We’re bringing back quite a few kids who some of them have 3 years experience. This will be 4 years experience for about 4 of the kids right now. We’re bringing up some kids who are gonna help us out so we’re gonna have some depth that we haven’t had in a while. I’m excited,” said Haley.

The players say the strength of the team this year centers around how long they have been playing together and feel that this team is a well balanced group on both the offensive and defensive ends.

”I think that our offense is going to be very impressive this year. We have a lot of strong shooters and some good post players,” said Emily Curley.

”Our Experience. We’ve got a couple of players playing their 4th year and I think that experience from last year especially is gonna help us this year,” said Lily Green.

”I feel like our strength will definitely be almost everything. We need to work a little bit better on our defense, but it’s definitely getting there,” said Peyton Britton.

So, what will the Lady Patriots have to do in order to have a successful season this year? According to Haley, the formula is simple.

”We gotta defend the basketball and we gotta board,” said Haley.

The Lady Patriots open their season on December 5th when they play host to Copenhagen.

On the ice, Clarkson hosted Syracuse in a non-league meeting at Cheel Arena.

Brooke McQuigg Lights the lamp to make it 1-0 Golden Knights.

On a second-period breakaway, Julia Minotti makes a big save.

Clarkson finally breaks out in the third when Rebecca Morissette wrists the puck in the net: 3-0 Knights.

Less than four minutes later, Anne Cherkowski tips in her second goal of the game: 4-0.

Laurence Frenette unleashes a blast for the final goal.: 5-0 Clarkson.

The Golden Knights stay unbeaten at 16-0-2, blanking Syracuse 5-0.
