SUNY Cortland has been a formidable and memorable foe to SUNY Plattsburgh women’s ice hockey. For the past two seasons, the Cardinals matched up against the Red Dragons in the New England Women’s Hockey League Championship. The matchup on Friday, Dec. 1, with both teams back in the State University of New York Athletic Conference, still has plenty of stakes, with No. 4 Plattsburgh grabbing the 2-0 shutout win early in the season over No. 13 Cortland. “It was a team effort from start to finish,” said SUNY Plattsburgh women’s hockey head coach Kevin Houle. “We played a real good hockey team and conference rival, so big win. We have to go down there later for two road games, so it was a huge win tonight.”The Cardinals scored their goals in the first and second periods. Ciara Wall was able to sneak the puck past the Red Dragon netminder after a couple of prior shot attempts to put her squad out in front 1-0. In the second period, a powerplay goal from Mae Olshansky scored the game’s second and final goal of the contest. It was a good moment for Olshansky, who didn’t register a minute in the SUNY Plattsburgh’s recent tournament matchups at Middlebury College. “It’s really nice to be able to contribute whenever I can,” Olshansky said. “If it’s on the powerplay that’s great, and if it means that I can score, it’s even better.”The score showed no secret that it was a solid game for SUNY Plattsburgh senior goalie Lilla Nease. Earning her third shutout win on 20 saves, Nease says that her defense was critical to helping her do her job tonight. “Having solid defense today really helped me,” Nease said. “They were back there a couple of the times Cortland was trying to cherry pick my team was on it, blocking passes, making good plays, and getting the puck out of the zone.”SUNY Plattsburgh will be right back in action at the Ronald B. Stafford Ice Arena to host SUNY Canton on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 3 p.m.
