Kathy Hochul announced on Monday, saying the move will allow crews time to finish construction on the new Belmont Park on Long Island.The 156th edition of the Belmont Stakes is set to kick off on June 8, with the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival to begin that Thursday, June 6.Officials said there will be a total of 23 stakes races during the four-day festival in Saratoga Springs.The upcoming races will also have the highest purse levels and number of stakes since the launch of the festival in 2014, according to New York State. The purse for this year’s Belmont Stakes will also increase from $1.5 million to $2 million.With the move to Saratoga Race Course, The New York Racing Association is working to make this year’s Belmont Stakes a contested 1 and 1/4-mile race instead of the traditional 1 and 1/2-mile race. That decision is still pending approval from the North American Graded Stakes Committee.The NYRA circuit will return to Saratoga Race Course on July 11 for the annual 40-day summer meet.This is the first time that Saratoga Race Course has hosted the Belmont Stakes in the more than 150-year history of the race.Ticketing information for the Belmont Stakes Racing Festival is expected to be available in early 2024.
