Owings Mills native gains millions of fans with ‘Therapy Gecko’ social media character
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A man from Owings Mills is quickly becoming an internet sensation. Lyle Drescher calls himself the “Therapy Gecko.”He records podcasts and social media videos and takes calls from strangers dressed as a gecko. His videos and podcasts catch the attention of millions of people. “Some people talk about deep interpersonal problems with their relationships and things that are bothering them on a deep philosophical level in their psyche, and then other people will talk about pooping their pants, and I try to approach all of those subjects with an equal level of attention and consideration,” Drescher said. Drescher is not a licensed therapist, but he is a comedian. He started doing stand-up comedy when he was in high school. Then, during the pandemic, he remembered an old gecko costume he had in his closet and decided to put it to use. “I started streaming myself on Reddit as a gecko taking phone calls, and the streams would go on to the front page of Reddit,” Drescher said. “My expectation was that I would be living here in my mom’s basement doing this forever, but it has gone much better than I thought it would.” Drescher has millions of followers and fans on TikTok, hundreds of thousands of podcast listeners every month, and celebrities like Lil Yachty, Tim Heidecker, Eric Andrè, and Marc Rebillet hopped on his show to have some fun. Beyond the podcast, Drescher takes his talents and his gecko suit all over the world. “It has been a great opportunity to travel the world talking to people. I’ve been all over Europe and America and Australia interviewing different people as a gecko and getting to experience all of these things and talk to all of these people and do all of these live shows,” Drescher said. “I think what I do now is a really great cross-section of all the things that have interested me throughout my life, so it’s comedy and traveling and having deep conversations with people, so I’m really grateful that I was able to find this weird thing that ended up being sort of perfect for me and my interests.” In finding this perfect fit, Drescher is also sending a message. “It is much more fun to walk through the world being curious and attempting to understand the things around you as opposed to trying to consistently judge them,” Drescher said. It’s a lesson and some laughter, all from a man dressed in a gecko suit. To see more of Drescher, follow him on TikTok, his podcast or his Twitch stream.
