The Vermont Burlesque Festival is increasing security ahead of the start of events this week.Festival organizers said they are taking steps to ensure the safety of their guests after hearing feedback on social media that many people felt unsafe attending this year’s festivities in downtown Burlington.“Being this close to the festival and noticing ticket sales were unusually low for Burlington based festival events (without a blizzard or ice storm on the horizon), we decided to ask a question on social media. There was an immediate and massive response,” said Cory Royer, Director and Co-Owner of The Vermont Burlesque Festival in a prepared statement.Royer said the festival asked on its Facebook page if people were hesitant to purchase a ticket due to safety concerns in downtown Burlington. He said the majority of respondents said yes, causing organizers to take additional steps to assuage concerns. For this year’s festival, several new security measures are being put into place, including parking for attendees at the College Street Garage, which is directly connected to the venue where the Burlington portion of the festival will take place. Festival organizers are also working with the City of Burlington, the Hilton Burlington Lake Champlain and private security companies to patrol the garage and conduct nightly patrols during the festival. Those who do not wish to attend the festival in person can tune in to several livestreamed events with the purchase of a ticket.”It is our hope calling attention to this issue along with continued efforts like these and future efforts from the city will increase the public’s confidence in the safety of downtown and the safety of future events there,” Royer said. You can see a full lineup of events and purchase tickets at the Vermont Burlesque Festival website.
