More than 100 people have been laid off following the announcement that the Putney Paper Mill has shuttered for good.Vermont Labor Commissioner Michael Harrington confirmed that the Putney Paper Mill facility on Water Street closed permanently on Tuesday, Jan. 16, laying off all 127 workers.The company that owns the mill, Soundview Vermont Holdings LLC, notified the Department of Labor about the closure and is working with state officials to provide 60-days pay with benefits to all of the affected workers, who will also receive a severance package, according to the announcement.The Department of Labor is now working to help those workers find new permanent employment by providing informational sessions on Unemployment Insurance and in hosting job fairs.The paper mill has been an employer in Putney for more than 200 years, after being founded in 1818, according to the town website.
