Plattsburgh Common Council has decided to postpone a vote on ward redistricting that was scheduled for this week.Plattsburgh Mayor Chris Rosenquest confirmed to NBC5 that a vote on the redistricting was postponed following a request from Common Council. The vote was scheduled to happen on Thursday evening. Rosenquest said the council will vote on the matter after the November presidential election.The process, which typically occurs every ten years following the completion of the U.S. Census, had already been postponed once. Republican Commissioner of the Clinton County Board of Elections David J. Souliere told NBC5 that the process should have been voted on in 2022 or early 2023.When NBC5 first reported on the redistricting earlier this week, Souliere told us there was concern about the process happening in a presidential election year, particularly ahead of the New York State presidential primary in April.NBC5 reached out to the Clinton County Board of Elections following today’s announcement and was provided with the following comment:”The Clinton County Board of Elections will continue to promote free and fair elections throughout the County. We are glad the City has decided to reapproach their redistricting process, with a plan to wait for implementation until after the Presidential Election. “We remain open and available to the City Council, and Mayors office for input during this process.”NBC5 will continue to follow the redistricting vote and will bring you the latest updates.
