A couple from South Hero was presented with a check for over $24,000 in unclaimed funds on Thursday as part of a new campaign to reunite Vermont nonprofits with their long-lost property.Don and Bernadette Pierson received an unclaimed property check from a forgotten PayPal account to benefit the Stefan Pierson Foundation, named in honor of the couple’s late son. The Pierson’s Foundation was created to support young adults diagnosed with cancer. The venture to reunite Vermonters with their hard-earned cash is a pilot partnership between Vermont State Treasurer Mike Pieciak and Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas, who are working to send checks containing unclaimed funds out to more than 250 Vermont nonprofits in the coming weeks. The Secretary of State’s database will be used to verify current addresses, with a certified letter sent out to alert those nonprofits of their incoming funds. More than $150,000 will be sent out to nonprofits like the one run by the Pierson family before the end of the month, officials said.“All across the state Vermont nonprofits are doing critical work for our communities,” said Copeland Hanzas in a prepared statement. “I’m proud to be working with Treasurer Pieciak to return funds to these organizations so they can use it to support their mission.”Pieciak said his office is taking a more proactive approach to getting Vermonters their money, as the state’s amount of unclaimed property has swelled to nearly $120 million.“Returning these funds will support organizations who are the fabric of our communities and often support Vermont’s most vulnerable,” said Treasurer Pieciak. “As many nonprofit organizations face financial challenges from inflation to workforce shortages and this summer’s flood, I’m excited we can return these dollars that will make a difference in Vermonters’ lives.”This latest program is a continuation of a pilot from October 2023 between the Treasurer’s Office and the Department of Taxes to send unclaimed property checks to 340 Vermonters.
