Vermonters to compete in biathlon at Empire State Winter Games
Ethan Allen Biathlon Club trains some of the best biathletes in the country, aiming for future Olympic success
Three Vermonters are looking to make their mark on the biathlon course this weekend at the Empire State Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York. Brian Dooley (Waterbury, Vermont), John Witmer (Williston, Vermont) and Christine Dillion (Underhill, Vermont) will represent the Ethan Allen Biathlon Club in the Masters Division. Masters coordinator Brian Dooley said he is hoping for a successful weekend for all the athletes on the track as he continues to help aid the growth of the sport in the United States.”I want to help support the younger athletes who are trying to achieve their Olympic dreams,” Dooley said. “The United States has never won an Olympic medal in biathlon. We’re hoping that with these athletes who are , perhaps someone within the sound of my voice .”Biathlon has been a sport in the Olympics since 1960, and the United States has never finished higher than sixth in a biathlon event. The Empire State Winter Games will host two biathlon races: Saturday, Feb. 3, will be a sprint event, and Sunday, Feb. 4, will be a super sprint.
