With the recent news that NBC5’s Stewart Ledbetter is retiring, lawmakers in Montpelier had a special surprise for the longtime anchor and political reporter.Ledbetter went to Montpelier on Tuesday to say goodbye to some of his colleagues in the state legislature and was surprised with a standing ovation in the House chamber.Lawmakers said they wanted to recognize Stewart for his decadeslong career and for his 20 years as a statehouse reporter with a resolution honoring his work.Over the years, Ledbetter has gotten to know nearly everyone in the statehouse, including State Rep. James Harrison of Rutland, who made the surprise possible.”He’s been a fixture in Vermont media, and it’s been sort of like that steady person,” said Harrison. “Always there, always straightforward in terms of his reporting.”There were lots of handshakes and hugs afterward, including from House Speaker Jill Krowinski.Stewart’s last day on air is next Friday, Feb. 16.
