Bodies of dead animals left as threats on Berkshire family’s property
“It is affecting my kids mentally, but they are scared for their lives,” said the homeowner, Liza Mumley.
A disturbing investigation is underway in Franklin County, Vermont after a family in the town of Berkshire reported they’re the target of several threats, many of them made with dead animals deliberately put on their property.According to the family, these threats, and others equally unsettling, have been ongoing for several years.”It is affecting my kids mentally, but they are scared for their lives,” said the homeowner, Liza Mumley. The family moved from Sheldon to Berkshire this past November, after they said they couldn’t take any more harassment. “When we left with our moving truck, they played ‘All I Do Is Win’ over their camera speakers, like basically ‘Ha ha, you won, we lost,’” Mumley said.Since November, three dead animals have been put on the Mumley’s property in the middle of the night: two chickens, one on a kid’s boogie board and the other under a scooter. This past Thursday, a crucified raccoon showed up on the property, prompting Mumley to reach out to NBC5. “This is like the fifth or sixth animal they’ve left; are we going to be next?” Mumley said. “I feel like when they have to tape my property off with crime scene tape is when they’re going to take it seriously.”The family said the threats have come in a number of different forms, including Tannerite explosions, setting fires around their property, and up to 300 gunshots fired weekly. ” Literally sounded like we’re living in a warzone,” Mumley said.Gary Mumley, Liza’s husband, added, “And actually, our livestock at the time, getting killed for no reason — it was beyond not OK. And tried shooting at our dogs, that’s our family too.”The family believes they know who is behind this, but no one is facing any charges right now.The conflict stems from a call the Mumleys made to police a couple years ago, when they alleged a person wouldn’t stop firing their gun, even with the family’s kids in the yard.”I was just scared a bullet would ricochet and hit my kid, and if it did hit my kid, my world would be gone,” Liza Mumley said.State police did confirm they have a suspect identified, but couldn’t go into any more detail. They said the person behind the incidents could face criminal threatening charges, or more depending on their history with the law.”We can’t have people that are trying to live their lives, but constantly in a state of fear, or unease for them and their families, that’s not acceptable, and we need to do our part to make sure they know we’re here,” said Vermont State Police St. Albans Barracks station commander Michael Filipek. As of Friday night, the investigation is ongoing. VSP asks anyone who has witnessed the threats, or has information on the person responsible for them, to contact the St. Albans Barracks.
