Residents of one California neighborhood say they are on alert after security camera footage from a home in the community shows a mountain lion attacking a family’s dog, according to reports from KCBS| KCALA partial video of the incident, captured on a Ring camera, shows the wild feline making its way onto a family’s property in La Verne, California, after Holly, a 93-pound giant schnauzer, had just gone outside for her nighttime bathroom break. It was around 9 p.m. last Saturday.La Verne is in Los Angeles County.Holly’s family was keeping an eye on her while she was outside. After the mountain lion pounced on the dog, One of Holly’s owners began yelling, which gave the giant schnauzer a chance to get up and get away from the big cat. After about 20 minutes, the mountain lion returned to the yard, but Holly was already safely inside. The dog had to get several stitches and is wearing a cone, but is recovering at home. While they’re glad she survived the attack, Holly’s family is still shaken up about the incident. Their neighbors told KCBS| KCAL that the video is being shared to keep parents and pet owners alert and to remind them to use caution. “It’s frightening because I have this tiny little dog here. She’s a little teacup Yorkie and obviously, we don’t let her out, especially at night,” neighbor Monique Olmedo said, later adding “This makes me feel nervous and so definitely want to be on the lookout.”And folks are on the lookout. Around 40 miles away from where Holly was attacked, a mountain lion was seen Thursday night in Lake Elsinore. “Bunnies by the hundreds out here, but we’ve never really seen a mountain lion, especially this close to our house. So it was a little scary but like exciting at the same time,” said Valerie Chapman, a Lake Elsinore resident whose security cameras caught footage of the mountain lion, which was on the prowl around 9 p.m. To Chapman, it seems a bit early in the night for a mountain lion to be in her neighborhood.”That’s why we were a little shocked. Like, usually we’d see that, like in the middle of the night you would think, but it was pretty early for something like that to be around,” Chapman said. According to reporting from KCBS-TV | KCAL-TV, it’s not clear what made the cats go hunting in the area, but the state’s estimated 4,500 mountain lions are known to roam neighborhoods in search of food. That’s especially the case if they have successfully found food in those neighborhoods before and/or if they can’t find enough to eat in the mountains. Environmentalists and conservationists say mountain lions are top predators and play a key role in the state’s ecosystem. The California Mountain Lion Project has placed tracking collars on several mountain lions to try and prevent tragedies and to preserve the species, according to reports.See more in the video player above.
