A 19-year-old Vermont man pleaded not guilty to a second-degree murder charge on Monday after he was arrested for shooting a man in Burlington over the weekend.Jaiden Green, of Burlington, appeared in court on Monday to answer to the charge stemming from an incident that happened just after 2 a.m. on Saturday morning. He also pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of violating the conditions of his release.According to police, Green was involved in an altercation with another man, causing him to shoot the victim in the arm.Police responded to Main Street between Church Street and S. Winooski Avenue after receiving reports of gunfire. The victim, later identified in court paperwork as 19-year-old Savion Wilson, suffered non-life-threatening injuries after he was shot in the arm. He was transported to UVM Medical and was eventually released.At around 7 p.m. Saturday, Burlington police took Green into custody. He was released on conditions and ordered to appear in court on Monday. Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad said he was bewildered by the judge’s decision to release Green, and said this is the first time something like this has happened since he took over the department last year.”When it comes to gun violence in a person who has attempted to murder another person on the streets of Burlington, I don’t see how we can be at odds, with the notion that jail is the best place for a person like this,” Murad said.Following Green’s appearance in court on Monday, the judge ruled that he be held without bail.If convicted of the charge, he could face 20 years to life behind bars.BPD is asking anyone with information to please call them at 802-658-2700.
