THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS THIS IS AN ACTIVE INVESTIGATION. SO WE WANT TO GET RIGHT TO KCRA. THREE’S CAROLINE ESTRADA, WHO IS IN EL DORADO COUNTY RIGHT NOW, AND CAROLINA, WHAT ARE YOU LEARNING ABOUT THIS INCIDENT. MELANIE, WE JUST LEARNED THE TWO VICTIMS OF THE ATTACK WERE BROTHERS, AND WE ARE LEARNING MORE DETAILS ABOUT HOW THE ATTACK HAPPENED. SO THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS THE 18 YEAR OLD VICTIM CALLED TO REPORT THAT HE AND HIS 21 YEAR OLD BROTHER WERE ATTACKED BY A MOUNTAIN LION WHILE ANTLER SHED HUNTING. SO WE KNOW THAT THIS HAPPENED IN A REMOTE, REMOTE AREA OF DARLING RIDGE ROAD AND SKID ROAD IN GEORGETOWN. THEY SAY THE 18 YEAR OLD SUFFERED SEVERE INJURIES TO HIS FACE AND WAS SEPARATED FROM HIS BROTHER DURING THE ATTACK. AT AROUND 134, DEPUTIES ARRIVED ON SCENE AND TRANSPORTED HIM TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL. WHILE SEARCHING THE AREA FOR THE BROTHER, THEY FOUND THE MOUNTAIN LION NEAR THE 21 YEAR OLD VICTIM. THEY SAY THEY FIRED SHOTS TO SCARE OFF THE MOUNTAIN LION AND EVENTUALLY THE VICTIM WAS DECLARED DEAD ON SCENE. WE SPOKE TO RESIDENTS IN THE AREA WHO SAY THEY’RE SHOCKED, ALTHOUGH THEY’RE AWARE OF MOUNTAIN LIONS IN THE AREA, THESE ATTACKS DON’T TEND TO HAPPEN. USUALLY THEY ATTACK THEIR LIVESTOCK OR SMALLER ANIMALS. THIS IS STILL AN ONGOING INVESTIGATION, AND THEY ALSO SAY THAT THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDFIRE ARE OUT THERE LOOKING TO LOCATE THAT MOUNTAIN LION. Mountain lion kills 1, injures another in state of California
A mountain lion in Northern California killed one man and injured another while the two were out hunting for shed antlers, authorities said Saturday. An 18-year-old male called the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Saturday afternoon, reporting that he and his 21-year-old brother were attacked by a mountain lion in a remote part of the county, the office said in a news release. Deputies arrived around 1:30 p.m. to find the younger brother with “traumatic injuries” to his face. Minutes later, deputies saw a crouched mountain lion next to the older brother on the ground, according to the statement. They fired their guns and scared off the mountain lion, but the older brother was deceased.Wardens with California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife are searching for the mountain lion. The department did not immediately respond to emails and a phone message seeking more details.Georgetown is a small, historic town about 50 miles northeast of Sacramento. Mountain lions have attacked humans previously, but the last fatal encounter was in 2004 in Orange County, according to a verified list kept by the fish and wildlife department.
