Vermont’s capital city will soon have a new post office. City officials in Montpellier say the United Postal Service plans to open the new site in the City Center building on Main Street. Several other businesses, including Skinny Pancake, are located there. Montpelier has been without a post office for more than 200 days since the historic July 2023 flood. In February, the USPS opened a temporary site in Berlin while the Federal Building remains closed. Gov. Phil Scott and Vermont’s Congressional delegation have previously called for the USPS to restore service in the capital city. In a joint statement, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Peter Welch and Rep. Becca Balint said, “We were proud to work with the people of Montpelier, advocates, and community and state leaders to ensure the return of a fully operational post office to our state’s capital and its community.”The Montpelier’s Commission for Recovery and Resilience also praised the delegation on social media for their efforts to help restore service to the city. Vermont’s Congressional delegation remains critical of the USPS leadership and said it should not have taken this long to restore service.”While this lease is good news, the failure of USPS leadership to address this matter in a safe, timely, and transparent manner remains unacceptable and emblematic of a nationwide crisis made worse by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy,” the delegation said in a joint statement Monday. There is no set opening date for the new Montpelier location.
