A home opener at Cardinal Park could not have gone much better for SUNY Plattsburgh softball. Plattsburgh tallied a combined 28 runs between games one and two against SUNY Canton, sweeping its first home doubleheader of the season. The chance to play on home grass was a blessing for Plattsburgh after spending its first 10 games of the season on the road. “I’ve missed our field,” said SUNY Plattsburgh Graduate pitcher Julia Golino. “We’ve been on the road all season thus far … it was really nice to be back on our field.”In game one, Plattsburgh secured a 16-0 shutout win against Canton. Golino, who pitched a complete game shutout victory with nine strikeouts, also watched herself and her team combine for 11 hits of offense in the victory. “We’ve been working a lot on going deep into the count and looking for our pitcher,” Golino said. “And we did that. We looked for our pitch and we drove whichever one looked good for us.”In Game Two the hitting stayed strong, this time Plattsburgh tallying 13 hits and the team’s home run of the season by Golino. The three-run shot in the second inning which gave the Cardinals an 8-0 lead was one swing that Golino could sense was going to happen eventually. “I was feeling it,” Golino said. “I had a lot of foul balls going toward the fence, so it was really good to get one in fair ball over the fence.”At the end of Game two, the Cardinals celebrated with some dance moves but also honored freshman infielder Sara Issacs with an honorary Plattsburgh gold chain necklace for a strong hitting performance in both games against Canton. Issacs, who went 5-7 with six RBIs and a triple against the Kangaroos, said that a greater sense of confidence is what helped her reach her best stretch of offense in her young college career. “I feel like coming out here and really feeling confident in myself and feeling confident in my swing was definitely a big part,” Issacs said. I really saw the ball well today and I feel like that had a lot to do with that.”See the highlights from the doubleheader voiced by NBC 5’s Noah CierzanPlattsburgh hopes to keep the hot bats going in their next home doubleheader against SUNY Potsdam on Saturday, April 5.
