Friday afternoon at around 2 p.m., Barre City police received a report about two men fighting in an apartment building on South Main Street in Barre. When police arrived at the scene, they learned one of the men had a rifle and had possibly gone into the basement to hide. Another group of males was said to be hiding in an upstairs stairwell of the building.Barre City police said the other units in the apartment were evacuated while officers searched and secured the building. The nearby elementary, middle, and high schools were all sent into lockdown, which remained in place past dismissal time.Meanwhile, officers searched the basement but did not find the man. When they looked upstairs, a group of four males was found in the stairwell.Police seized 87.16 grams of crack cocaine, 22.5 grams of fentanyl, several thousand dollars in cash, a 9mm pistol, and an AR-15-style rifle.One of the four males was identified as a 15-year-old missing out of Springfield, Massachusetts. He was subsequently released to his parents pending a later court date.Two of the other men provided differing names and dates of birth to police, and as of Saturday evening, both have yet to be positively identified.The fourth man was identified as 23-year-old Joseph Maitin of Middletown, New York.The three men were taken to Northwest Correctional Center in lieu of $200,000 bail pending arraignment on Monday in Washington County Superior Court. All four males are being charged with fentanyl trafficking, sale of cocaine, dispensing out of a dwelling, and possession of a regulated drug.Barre City police said the investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Their department was assisted on the scene by officers from Barre Town police and Vermont State Police.
