Section VII can put Northeastern Clinton Central High School in the record books for a historic accomplishment. NCCS is the first-ever Section VII girls flag football sectional champions after its 20-13 win against Beekmantown High School. “It’s awesome,” said NCCS quarterback and championship game MVP Bailee LaFountain. “Not a lot of people get to say they accomplished something like this, and I’ll remember this forever.”The Cougars clawed their way back into this contest in a similar style to their win against Saranac High School in the sectional semifinals. Trailing Beekmantown 13-0 at the start of the contest, it was NCCS who scored 20 straight unanswered points and didn’t allow any more points after Beekmantown’s first two drives of the game. Against Saranac, it was the work of athletic and tall wideout Desiree Dubois, who converted on major third and fourth down conversions, but this time LaFountain was sharing the ball around to other targets like Laci Roberts, Maddy Arno and Brynn Hite. Both Arno and Hite caught LaFountain’s two passing touchdowns, while LaFountain also took in a rushing touchdown for NCCS’ first score of the game. LaFountain says that reacting to how the Beekmantown defense was playing Dubois gave her more opportunities to throw to her other teammates.”Desiree (Dubois) was marked up pretty good,” LaFountain said. “But I knew I had to go to my other receivers which wasn’t a problem because I have faith in every single one of my wide receivers.”Hite delivered on the game-winning grab, who was in a contested battle with Beekmantown defensive back Kaydence Rovers but secured the catch near the sideline of the end zone to give NCCS the late lead in the second half. “I’ve been running the sidelines routes, and I knew that this one mattered,” Hite said. “I knew she was right on my back, I just had to suck it up and brace the impact and it worked out.” Beekmantown’s offense featured two passing touchdowns from Payton Parliament. The first to Jaelyn McDonald and the other to Emily Burke. NCCS will face Burnt Hills Ballston Lake High School on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Ausable Valley High School in the New York state regional finals. Win, and the team moves on to the state final four. “I’m so excited, it won’t be easy I’m sure, but we are going to get back into it, come back and work hard and we’ll give it our all,” LaFountain said.
