In the 2023 Section VII Class B baseball semifinals, Peru High School’s Donnie Mitchell hit the final out of the game, leading Beekmantown to advance to the sectional championship. This time, Mitchell helped lead Peru to victory. With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 8th inning, Mitchell scored the game winning run at third base with an RBI single leading to the 3-2 victory. “This year I ended the game with a single and that felt pretty good,” Mitchell said. “Just looking to put the ball in play, two strikes were on me, so just got to hope and pray I guess.” Mitchell was also a key reason defensively for Peru’s win, holding Beekmantown scoreless for the first six innings of the game. The same goes for Beekmantown ace pitcher Steve Bronson, who didn’t let up a single run until the 7th inning.That run was scored from a timely RBI double from Peru’s Landen Duprey. The senior first baseman also scored on a sacrifice fly which helped tie the game in the 7th inning when Peru trailed 2-0. Peru will face Plattsburgh High School in the Section VII Class A baseball championship on Thursday, May 24, at 4:30 p.m. at SUNY Plattsburgh’s Chip Cummings Field. The same two schools will compete in the Section VII Class A softball championship on Thursday, May 24, at 4:30 p.m. at SUNY Plattsburgh’s Cardinal Park. The Hornets punched their ticket into the matchup against the Nighthawks after a dominant offensive outburst in a 20-9 win against Beekmantown High School.
