Saranac softball faced adversity in the bottom of the 7th when trailing their rivals Northeastern Clinton Central High School 6-4, but three RBI hits by Molly Denis, Maddie Gagnier and the walk-off hit from McKenzie Hanson completed a 3-0 comeback in the last frame leading to the 7-6 championship victory. Hanson understood the moment when the game was tied at 6-6 with the game-winning run at second and just one out. “I had a runner there for me, and I just needed to hit the ball,” Hanson said. “I just knew as soon as I made contact that was the one we needed, and it was great to do it with this team.”Saranac baseball battled back down 4-0 by the top of the third, where a three-run frame from the Spartans tied things up at 4-4 against Saranac Lake High School. No teams scored until extras, where a timely triple from Landen Giroux set up a walk-off bunt from Brady Blair to win the contest 5-4 in extra innings.Saranac adds two more sectional trophies to its trophy case and punches its ticket in the New York state playoffs.Saranac softball will host the winner of the Class B regional semifinals to face the winner of either the Section II or the Section X championships. That matchup is currently scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 1, at SUNY Plattsburgh’s Cardinal Park.
