A woman from Champlain, New York, died at UVM Medical Center from injuries sustained in a crash on Tuesday evening. Vermont State Police were dispatched to the area of U.S. Route 2 in the town of Grand Isle just before 6 p.m. Preliminary investigation determined that 26-year-old Shantel Lafountain, of Champlain, was driving a Toyota Yaris on Route 2 when she collided with a Jeep Grand Cherokee operated by Richard Meissner of New Jersey.Lafountain and Meissner were both taken to UVM Medical Center, where Lafountain was pronounced dead. At the time of the crash, police say both Meissner and Lafountain were traveling North on U.S. Route 2. Just before the intersection of Pearl Street, Lafountain’s vehicle struck the rear end of Meissner’s vehicle.Meissner was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Police have not determined if Lafountain was wearing a seat belt. Anyone with information or who may have witnessed this crash is asked to call Vermont State Police in St. Albans at 802-524-5993.
