Vermont State Police say they have arrested a man in the homicide investigation of Roberta Martin. Darren Martell of St. Albans is being charged with aggravated murder.Roberta Martin was first reported missing by neighbors on Wednesday, July 17 after they saw she wasn’t home. Her family told police they hadn’t heard from her since the previous night. Dozens of people and law enforcement searched for her. Martin’s body was found on Sunday morning in a wooded area on Sand Hill Road in Enosburgh. An autopsy on Monday confirmed that they were her remains. On Monday, July 22, police were looking to speak with Martell about Martin’s disappearance. That’s when he was found masturbating on a public path in a wooded area between the St. Albans Town Educational Center and a 55+ living community on Gricebrook Road. When police tried to arrest him, he fled into the woods. He was found and arrested a short time later. Martell pled not guilty to a separate charge of Lewd and Lascivious conduct in court on Tuesday. Police say Darren Martell had been living with the residents of a house next door to Martin’s home on Butternut Hollow Road. Martell is currently being held without bail and will be arraigned at 1:30 PM on Friday at Vermont Superior Court in St. Albans on the aggravated murder charge.
