Synchronized diving duo known as ‘Cook’N Bacon’ earn first US Olympic medals

Divers Sarah Bacon and Kassidy Cook won the first U.S. medal of the Paris Olympics Saturday when they snagged the silver for the women’s synchronized 3-meter springboard event.Related video above: Snoop Dogg carries Olympic torch on its final leg to ParisThe gold was taken by reigning world champions Chang Yani and Chen Yiwen of China, who scored 337.68 points.The U.S. team, affectionately known as “Cook’N Bacon,” brought home the silver with 314.64 points. Bacon and Cook have leveraged their unique last names into partnerships with Hormel Black Label Bacon and Minnesota Pork.The Great Britain team of Scarlett Mew Jensen and Yasmin Harper took the bronze with a final score of 302.28.China’s Yani and Yiwen won gold in the last three world championships and were heavy favorites going in.The crowd, heavy with Chinese fans and and flags, chanted “jiayou” — roughly translated “lets go” — each time the Chinese walked out to dive.This event was added in 2000, and Chinese women have won gold six times in seven Games. The only loss was to Russia in 2000. China won three years ago in Tokyo with Shi Tingmao and Wang Han.
