Small tornado confirmed in St. Lawrence County, NY
EF-U tornado marks 28th so far in New York this year
A brief, weak tornado touched down in Pikes Corner, New York, on Sunday, Aug. 11, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Burlington, Vermont. The tornado occurred at approximately 2:18 PM EDT, just south of Country Club Road near Matoon Creek. Despite its occurrence, the tornado did not cause any structural damage and no injuries or deaths were reported. Based on video evidence provided by local media and spotters, the tornado is thought to have lasted approximately one minute. The tornado’s path was short, spanning 0.25 miles and a maximum width of 10 yards. Preliminary reports indicate that it was an EF-0 tornado with peak winds of 65 mph. However, because there was no ground survey, the NWS classified it as an EF-U (unknown) due to a lack of direct evidence. If additional information is determined, it will be assigned a number on the scale before storm data is finalized.The NWS uses the Enhanced Fujita Scale to rate tornadoes, which ranges from EF-0 (65-85 mph winds) to EF-5 (more than 200 mph winds).
