The body of a missing Bennington man was believed to have been recovered on Saturday morning after a dayslong search.Vermont State Police confirmed that they located a body floating in the Sherman Reservoir at approximately 9:47 a.m. on Saturday. The body matched the description of 59-year-old Matthew Houskeeper, who was reported missing on Aug. 14.The body is now being sent to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington for positive identification and an autopsy, according to police.The search for Houskeeper had gone on for nearly two weeks when police were notified on Aug. 23 that two fishermen had located a kayak that was believed to belong to the missing man days before. His abandoned vehicle was also found on Tunnel Street by the Sherman Reservoir in Whitingham on Aug. 16.The fishermen told police they found the kayak on the Sherman Reservoir on Thursday, Aug. 15. They removed the kayak from the water believing that it was abandoned property. Once they learned that the kayak was connected to Houskeeper, they immediately notified law enforcement. Officials ask anyone who might have information regarding Houskeeper to call the Vermont State Police Westminster Barracks at 802-722-4600.
