A team of New York first responders will head down south as Hurricane Helene prepares to make landfall in Florida on Thursday night.New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that 16 swift water rescue personnel have been sent to Conover, North Carolina, where they will be deployed as directed once Helene makes landfall. Two canines and emergency response equipment including Zodiac boats, high-water rescue vehicles and drones are also being send south with the team.Members will help conduct search and water rescues for people and animals and will also be able to provide immediate emergency medical care.The team is made up of members from the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Office of Fire Prevention and Control, the Department of Environmental Conservation and State Police.Earlier this week, the Vermont Urban Search and Rescue team deployed to Pensacola, Florida to help residents ahead of Helene’s landfall.Helene is expected to make landfall in the Big Bend area of Florida on Thursday night as a Category 3 storm. It is then expected to head northwest toward the Tennessee Valley.
