BUT SADLY… SHE DIED A WEEK LATER FROM EXHAUSTION… AND WAS BURIED IN HER BLUE DRESS. NOW – CAROLINE REPORTEDLY HAUNTS THE AREA – AND HAS BECOME KNOWN AS “THE BLUE LADY.” SOT PEJEAU: “WHEN IT’LL GET STORMY OUT, I THINK IT PROBABLY DRUMS UP THOSE BAD MEMORIES FOR HER. The legend of the Blue Lady of Hilton Head Island
It’s Halloween week, and sister station WJCL has a spooky tale for you, taking you to the Palmetto Dunes Resort in South Carolina to introduce you to the “Blue Lady of Hilton Head Island.”Aug. 27, 1893, one of the deadliest hurricanes in American history made landfall in the Savannah/Hilton Head area. At the time, Adam Fripp was the lighthouse keeper for the island’s lighthouse, and he was devoted to his job of keeping ships safe.”During the hurricane, trying to man the lighthouse, keep it going, actually fell down the stairs. He unfortunately passed,” said Charles Pejeau, food and beverage director and executive chef at the Palmetto Dunes Resort.Legend has it, Fripp’s daughter, Caroline, put her father to bed, and he had one dying request.”Rumor has it that on his kind of his last breath, he told her to make sure she stays at the lighthouse and keeps it functioning,” Pejeau said.According to legend, Caroline, wearing a blue dress, worked bravely through the night during the treacherous storm to keep the lanterns lit. But sadly, she died a week later from exhaustion and was buried in her blue dress.Now, Caroline reportedly haunts the area and has become known as “The Blue Lady.””When it’ll get stormy out, I think it probably drums up those bad memories for her. And that’s when she kind of pops out. When it’s dark and stormy out,” Pejeau said.Some even report seeing The Blue Lady near the top of the lighthouse or pacing outside of it.”I have a couple kitchen staff that have, thinks maybe, the kitchen can have a visit from her every once in a while. Maybe early, early in the morning or late at night. Kind of, some lights will flip on and off, or the sink will turn on randomly,” Pejeau said.To honor the Blue Lady’s legacy, Palmetto Dunes created a Blue Lady IPA in partnership with local brewery Shellring Ale Works.The beer is served at all Palmetto Dunes golf courses and grilles and is especially popular around Halloween. Today, the lighthouse sits near the fifth hole of the Arthur Hills Golf Course in Palmetto Dunes.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and was refurbished in 2019.
