Plattsburgh State women’s basketball was able to take care of business in their first two games at home. A strong two days of play at the annual Cardinal Classic women’s basketball tournament inside SUNY Plattsburgh’s Memorial Hall led to Plattsburgh grabbing two wins in a row against Castleton University and Utica University. “We wanted to start the season off strong,” said Plattsburgh State sophomore guard Julia Greek. “This is two non-league games so coming out with two wins give us good confidence going into the SUNYAC games. It’s good confidence for us.”A strong team defensive performance helped lead the Cardinals to a 52-45 victory over the Castleton Spartans. Plattsburgh forced 21 turnovers against Castleton, with 13 of those turnovers being steals turning into nine fastbreak points. The Cardinals also benefited from another strong outing by senior forward and Redford, New York, native Payton Couture. She scored a game-high 21 points with 10 rebounds for her double-double. Selma Deisz and Jaden Wilson also chipped in with 10 and 9 points, respectively. After winning in last year’s meeting, Plattsburgh State alumnus Kathleen Payne and her Spartans dropped this year’s matchup but still featured solid outings from her Vermont natives.West Rutland native Arianna Coombs led Castleton in scoring with 12 points on 5 of 10 shooting. Grafton native Maggie McKearin finished with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. On Saturday, Nov. 16 it was all about the shooting for Plattsburgh State. The Cardinals 12 three-pointers leading them to shoot 50 percent from beyond the arc led to the 67-40 win over the Utica Pioneers. Plattsburgh had three players finish in double figures with Greek leading the way at 13 points, followed by Couture and Imani Walcott who both each had 12 points. The Cardinals were at their peak in the third quarter, where their 57 percent shooting from the field showed their confidence on offense was at its highest point. “Having confidence in each other is definitely big,” Greek said. “Moving the ball around, knowing what each other can do. Just knowing your teammates and being ready to shoot the ball.”Plattsburgh women’s and men’s basketball teams will both be in action on Tuesday, Nov. 19 when both teams host a doubleheader against St. Lawrence University. The women’s contest will tip off at 5:30 p.m. while the men’s game will follow at 7:30 p.m.
