Several local police departments are working to find the people who have been trying to steal ATMs out of drug and convenience stores.Police believe these attempts could all be connected. We have seen at least three attempted ATM thefts in the span of a week, all in different spots. The first was last Wednesday at the Kinney Drugs on Route 116 in Hinesburg. Police say someone backed their car into the store and wrapped a chain around the ATM, trying to steal it. They were unsuccessful, so they drove away.In Burlington, police released surveillance pictures after they say someone tried dragging the ATM machine outside of the Kinney on Shelburne Road. The suspect was able to get it into the parking lot, but could not get into the ATM, so they ran off. They drove away in a silver Mitsubishi.Police also responded to an attempt at the Jolley convenience store in Ferrisburgh. They are looking for at least three people who drove a grey Sedan and white minivan before breaking the glass at the front entrance. They then unsuccessfully attempted to steal an ATM.Police believe these incidents could be connected. “I think it’s likely in this case. Just the way they’re committing these crimes, in all three, they’re backing a car up to the entrance to the store, breaking in with a blunt object, and wrapping a chain around the atm and trying to pull it out when it’s attached to their car,” said Trooper Sean Hauter with the Vermont State Police. If you know about any of these incidents, you are asked to give police a call.
