The Vermont State Police is continuing its search Saturday for a man it believes shot and injured a St. Johnsbury police officer, Capt. Jason Gray, after they responded to a reported domestic violence situation on Friday afternoon.State police said Gray was taken to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and is in serious but stable condition as of Saturday afternoon. The police captain is a 25-year veteran of the local police department. St. Johnsbury police Chief Joel Pierce said he has been in contact with Gray’s family. “The circumstance is not anything that anybody ever was to deal with,” the chief said. On Saturday, the town held an emergency select board meeting. The board unanimously passed a motion to offer up to $25,000 in rewards to those who provide investigators with information that leads to Scott Mason’s current location.Additionally, the Federal Bureau of Investigation is offering a separate reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to Mason. “There is an individual at large that is violent and willing to be violent towards police officers,” St. Johnsbury Town Manager Chad Whitehead said. State police are still searching for the person they believe shot Gray. They have been identified as 38-year-old Mason. Police believe he could be armed and dangerous and that the public should not approach him and instead immediately call 911.A section of Portland Street, where the shooting occurred, was partially closed for the investigation. Mason has not been located there, and the road has since reopened. State police said a warrant has been issued for Mason in connection with the shooting. He is wanted on charges of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer. State police are asking residents in the area to check any of their home surveillance devices and to report any suspicious activity. The agency is also asking residents to take reasonable precautions, such as locking doors. “We’re not going to let up our search until we find Mr. Mason. What we’d like is help from the public. So if the public does see him, please call 911,” said Maj. Shawn Loan, commander of the Criminal Division for the VSP.Mason is described as 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighing around 220 pounds, with brown hair and hazel eyes. He lives in a second-floor apartment at 261 Portland St. in St. Johnsbury and was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt and pants. The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. Friday.
