People living in northern Vermont and New York towns have noticed some unusual lights in the sky this weekend.NBC5 has received multiple reports from residents in Northern New York of lights that appear to be moving in some areas near the Canadian border.Similarly, reports are coming out of Franklin County, Vermont. Some living in St. Albans and Georgia have identified them as drones, something other parts of the country have seen pop up recently. “We have seen lots of recent sightings in New York, New Jersey, Long Island and Staten Island,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.Schumer is pushing for new technology and legislation to address these recent drone sightings in the Northeast. Schumer said he reached out to the Department of Homeland Security about implementing a type of drone detection system called “Robin” and for support of a bill that will give local authorities more oversight to detect drones.”If the technology exists for a drone to make it up into the sky, there certainly is the technology that can track the craft with precision and determine what the heck is going on,” Schumer said.New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said that drone activity shut down runways at Stewart Airfield in North Windsor Friday night.NBC5 reached out to the flight deck officer at the Adirondack Regional Airport, who said that no one has reported any drone sightings to them, but they are aware of the sightings through social media.They have no additional precautions in place at this time other than federal policies that require drone operators to register with the Federal Aviation Administration.
