Roars of excitement in Catamount Country on Tuesday afternoon as the UVM men’s soccer team returned home after their historic win in North Carolina on Monday night.The team was greeted by the cheers of fans and loved ones at Patrick Gymnasium following a police escort back to campus.”It was spectacular. That’s all I can say,” said University of Vermont fan Kim Phillips.It was a nail-biting 2-1 victory against Marshal University after the game went into overtime. Fans say they are still shaking after the close game.”That goalie almost made that save! Everyone said the place was rocking after. I know my house was rocking,” said University of Vermont’s Kenneth Vachereau.Cheers echoed through the lobby of Patrick Gym as the team walked in with its NCAA championship trophy.”It is such an amazing accomplishment for such an awesome team that stuck together,” said coach Rob Dow.Among the fans was longtime UVM men’s basketball coach Tom Brennan. He says he is overjoyed to see how far the sports program at the university he loves has come.”This is the greatest sporting event that has ever happened in Vermont. The most unbelievable,” said Brennan.The team says it hopes to hold another fan event to celebrate when students return to campus from their winter break.
