Vermont vs. New York on the high school ice had the potential to be a great game on paper. The latest meeting between Rice Memorial High School and Saranac High School boys’ ice hockey did not disappoint. A defensive battle through the first two periods led to drama in the final period. Two goals from both sides, including a game-tying goal with zero seconds left on the clock from Saranac’s Ashtyn Catlin, sent the game into overtime. However, it was a breakaway chance by Oliver Quong that sealed the deal in the first OT, leading the 2-1 final in favor of Rice. “I don’t want to come down to New York and not beat a team,” Quong said. “It’s a pretty big accomplishment to come down to a bigger state and beat a hockey team.”Quong got the breakaway game-winner off a faceoff pass, which led directly into his stick. With nobody in the vicinity to cut off his angle to shoot, He rifled a shot, which hit the top left corner of the net, sealing the deal for a game-winner. Quong says his motivation to score was for his goalie, Henry Monaghan, who only let up one goal with multiple other shots saved for his team. “It felt really good, I felt like our team earned that,” Quong said. “That one was definitely our goalie. Our goalie stood on his head out there … that one was mainly for the goalie because he played amazing, and I wanted to play for him.”Catlin’s goal was also special — a game-tying goal scored the blue line as a one-timer. He instantly fired up the Saranac crowd as he slammed his body in front of the glass near Spartan fans. Rice scored the first goal of the game off a pass from Quong, which set up Water Morris for the goal. See the highlights for this instant classic in the video above.
