The longest ice skating trail in North America is open for the season, but it’s under new management for the first time in 15 years. The Lake Morey Resort said its new insurance company wouldn’t cover the trail, so now the town manages it. “A lot of municipalities have ice skating rinks. We do stuff in the summer on the lake, so we figured we’d be covered,” said Fairlee Town Administrator Ryan Lockwood. Now, skaters can access the trail via the public beach. There is overflow parking available at the resort if needed. While the inn is no longer in charge of it, it’s still helping to maintain it. “The Lake Morey Inn, Mark, volunteered his maintenance equipment and his time to run it, so we have that all covered,” Lockwood said. “He bores the ice and checks for ice thickness.” The town sees a big boost from both sides of the Vermont-New Hampshire border when the lake freezes over. Lockwood told NBC5, “It’s a great tourism driver and economic development driver for our town. It brings people from everywhere.” Lockwood encourages visitors to check the town’s website for ice and weather conditions. The rink is open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., weather dependent.
