As Vermonters continue to face the impacts of the housing crisis, a new coalition has started to address the issue. The initiative is called “Let’s Build Homes,” and it brings together over 100 organizations with a mission to bring relief and revitalize communities across the state. It is led by former Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger and officially launched Tuesday in Montpelier. Aiming to tackle Vermont’s severe shortage of affordable housing, the coalition is promoting the construction of new developments. Lora Lee Tester, president NEK Chamber of Commerce, said, “Let’s Build Homes is a critical step towards addressing this crisis. It’s about breaking down the barriers that make it so difficult to build the homes we need. It’s about creating policies that give every region in Vermont the flexibility to grow in ways that works for them.”One of the major challenges facing the state’s housing market is the extended permitting process, which has delayed construction projects.Additionally, Vermont is experiencing a shortage of trade laborers, further complicating efforts to meet the growing demand.Evan Landfeldt, CEO of O’Brien Brothers, said, “There is still incredible demand because there is a scarcity in housing, but again, at the same time, we can’t build fast enough because we don’t have enough subcontractors at our disposal.”The coalition has set an ambitious goal of creating 30,000 new homes in Vermont by the end of 2029. Achieving this will require the state to double its current building rate.Weinberger said, “Yes. This is an ambitious goal that will require doubling our housing production rate and sustaining that for years into the future. However, we’ve done this before.”By supporting policy changes and streamlining the construction process, “Let’s Build Homes” hopes to make homes affordable for all Vermonters.
