‘He’s just a joy’: Texas community embraces rooster that mysteriously showed up near grocery store

A rooster in Texas who has been hanging out in the parking lot of a grocery store is becoming quite the celebrity in his small town.The rooster, affectionately known as Ol’ Red, has his own Facebook page. For about a month now, the rooster has been seen outside a grocery store called Brookshire’s. He’s there all day long from about 7 a.m. until 5 or 6 p.m. when he leaves to roost.Some locals say they don’t know how he got there or where he’s from, but they are enjoying his company.”And this rooster is just a joy. He’s a joy. He’s friendly, he doesn’t hurt anybody, and he’s beautiful,” said Elsie Hollis, who said he’s become their community mascot. “If it is true that maybe he got left behind, I hear a lot of people feed him, and this is where he feels safe at,” said Shaiann Salinas.”He’s just appeared out of nowhere, and we all just kind of take care of him. Some of us feed him. I keep a little coffee cup full of chick food because I have 60 chickens from our farm,” said Stacy Ham.Hollis said they are a close-knit town and she feels he represents what it’s like to live out in the country.
