
Vermont-based cheese and dairy maker Cabot Creamery is issuing a voluntary recall for one of its butter products over contamination concerns.Cabot issued the recall on Wednesday, saying a lot of its 8 oz. Extra Creamy Premium Butter, Sea Salted with the Lot Code of 090925-055 is being recalled due to possible coliform bacteria contamination.Coliform is commonly found in the environment and feces of humans and animals, according to the Vermont State Department of Health. Most types of coliform bacteria are harmless, but fecal coliform and bacteria such as E. coli can cause illness.To date, there have been no reported complaints or illnesses related to the product, Cabot said. The company was able to successfully recover more than 99% of the recalled product before it was sold to consumers, and said only 17 retail packages, or 8.5 pounds of butter were sold to consumers in Vermont.The butter was sold in a total of seven states, including Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire and New York. Cabot has recalled 1,700 pounds of the product, according to NBC News.No other products were affected, Cabot said.The butter is packaged as two 4-ounce sticks in cardboard shells.
