Tensions rise as House Speaker Mike Johnson looks to reinstate Stefanik to prior committees

Tensions are rising between Republican house leaders as they struggle to follow through on a promise to Northern New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik.House Speaker Mike Johnson has been looking to reappoint the congresswoman to House leadership since she stepped down following her earlier nomination as President Donald Trump’s pick for United Nations Ambassador.However, that nomination was pulled last month after Trump said he needed Stefanik in the House to hold on to a narrow Republican margin.On Wednesday, Stefanik announced that she had been appointed as the Chairwoman of the House Republican Leadership and said she would be continuing her work as a senior member of the House Intelligence Committee. However, that committee is currently full, leaving Speaker Johnson in a challenging position. He either has to remove a Republican from the committee or change the House rules to add a member, which could lead to another Democrat being added.No members have been approached yet about whether they would be willing to forfeit their spot for Stefanik.
