
Plattsburgh Mayor Wendell Hughes announced his pick for the city’s new police chief on Wednesday. Hughes announced that he has appointed Lieutenant Jarrod Trombley to head the city’s police department. Trombley was one of four finalists for the role, according to Hughes, with two of them dropping out of the search due to “personal reasons.”The remaining two candidates went through an interview process by a search committee earlier this month, with that committee ultimately naming Trombley as the best candidate for the job.Sergeant Joel Vassar was also appointed as the new captain of police. Hughes said both men were the best choices to lead a young police force.”Our department is a young department. They need a leader,” Hughes said. “And hopefully this will be the next step in making the police department truly a community. We got to get back to the community policing, and I think that’s where we’re headed and that’s where I want to be.”Trombley, along with Lieutenants Josh Pond, and Kevin Jessey, have been collectively overseeing the police department since the departure of previous chief Pete Mitchell.The search for the next chief of police in Plattsburgh has been underway for several months, Mitchell’s final day on the job in September.Hughes previously said that selecting the Lake City’s newest police chief was among his top priorities.Trombley’s name had come up for consideration as chief years earlier after he received support from the community and some Plattsburgh Common Council members in 2021. The position ultimately went to Bud York on a provisional basis.If approved by the council, Trombley and Vassar are scheduled to begin working in their new roles on Friday.
