Christopher Tate appeared in court on Friday and pleaded not guilty to a single larceny charge after police said he robbed a bank in BrattleboroCourt documents said Tate, 41, entered the bank Thursday and handed a note to a worker that said, “This is a robbery from Mandate Records open the register.” Tate allegedly jumped onto the counter after the worker retrieved $500 and took it fr0m them. He then left in a car with three other people inside. Those individuals told police that they were not aware of what Tate allegedly did. The car was stopped on Elliot Street. That’s when Tate got out and ran away. Police say he took refuge in a garage not far from the Green Street School and was later arrested without incident. Court documents said the money was taken as evidence. No one involved was hurt. The police presence led to a lockdown of the school as after school programming was happening during the incident. Principal Kate Margaitis said school staff and students acted accordingly. The after school program continued after Tate’s arrest. “We continued on with our regularly scheduled programs and then families were notified of the incident. We really encouraged kids to talk with their families afterwards,” Margaitis said. A judge has ordered Tate to be held in the custody of the Vermont Department of Mental Health once he is deemed eligible to be released from hospital care. After that, he is expected to appear back in court.
