
A man is in critical condition after being struck by a car at North Beach on Monday night, according to the Burlington Police Department.Officers responded to the scene shortly after 8 p.m. and found the injured man in the North Beach parking area. He was transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center for treatment.Police located the driver involved, who reportedly claimed she hit the man while fleeing after he pulled out a gun. Authorities have stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation remains active.“There was at least one person in the park brandishing a gun, creating a lot of fear and anxiety,” said Burlington Interim Police Chief Shawn Burke. “That caused some chaos at the exit, and that’s when this particular person was run over.”Witnesses at the scene described confusion and panic as beachgoers tried to make sense of what happened.Trevor Sainwe, who was in the water at the time, said he rushed to the parking lot after hearing commotion from his friends.“I see just a dude laying on the floor, bleeding out. Everyone at the beach was basically surrounding him,” Sainwe said. “She was screaming when they took him away.”Police say more than 40 calls to 911 came in during the incident. Investigators are still working through those reports to determine the full timeline and nature of events.Burke noted that North Beach has seen an uptick in police calls this season, including reports of fights, intoxication, and now firearms.He added that the department is working with the city to consider new safety measures, including stepped-up patrols.Regular visitors to North Beach say they’ve always considered it a safe place to spend time, and many hope it stays that way.“We come here a lot and have never had anything bad happen,” said Amelia Morris, a UVM student. “It’s a great place to hang out.”Her friend, Emma Murphy, added, “It’s important to speak up if you see something. This is a spot a lot of people love, and we want to keep it that way.”The investigation is ongoing. Police are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
