Citizens of Iran and Uzbekistan detained near Champlain, NY port of entry
Border Patrol says all seven people apprehended had previously entered the U.S. illegally.
Seven foreign nationals from Iran and Uzbekistan are awaiting removal proceedings after being taken into custody near Mooers Forks, NY, earlier this month. According to U.S. Border Patrol Swanton Sector, agents received a tip about suspicious activity in the town on July 1. Agents say they found a minivan there with five citizens of Iran and two citizens of Uzbekistan inside.USBP says all seven entered the country illegally at various locations along both the southern and northern U.S. borders. Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., 21st District, released a statement regarding the arrests, thanking law enforcement officials and pointing to increased funding for border staff in the GOP’s recently passed ‘One Big Beautiful Bill.’ Since January 2025, USBP says border activity reports from the public have increased by 150 percent, but cross-border apprehensions have decreased significantly during the same period. According to a social media post, agents apprehended about 300 people believed to be crossing the border illegally between February and May 2025. In June 2024 alone, USBP reported more than 3,300 apprehensions.The migrants are all detained and will face removal proceedings in immigration court.
