Boater in Maine helps rescue man, dog after lobster boat explosion
We’re hearing exclusively from a boater who helped rescue a man and his dog Saturday afternoon after a lobster boat exploded in Harpswell, Maine, which is located within Casco Bay in the Gulf of Maine, around 35 miles from Portland, Maine.Ray Hale was on the water with his family, heading from Port Harbor Marine to Dolphin Marina, when they heard a loud noise. “It sounded like a cannon going off,” Hale said.Hale and his family made their way toward the noise, and that’s when they arrived to find a lobster boat on fire by Upper Flag Island and Eagle Island. He said they were able to get the man aboard their boat safely. Hale said another boater jumped in the water to help the dog reunite with its owner.According to Hale, the man said he had smelled gas just before the explosion happened.”He said, I was just about to shut it off, and it blew up and blew me off the boat,” Hale said. Maine Marine Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene. Authorities have not released the man’s name, and the cause of the explosion is still being looked into by the Coast Guard.Hale said the man and his dog were shaken up, but both seemed to be OK.
