
There was thunderous applause Saturday night as the crowd of thousands witnessed the Vermont Green FC win their first-ever national title.Fans are sharing their reaction Monday after that nail-biting final goal led to the Green’s 2-1 victory at Virtue Field.”It was mind-boggling and just so exciting to be a part of and realize just how big soccer has become in the state,” said fan Cait Fogel.On Monday, Soccer Post, a local sports and fitness outlet in Shelburne, celebrated the historic win.”We didn’t lose a single game this year. It’s a pretty cool thing to say. They’re calling us ‘The Invincibles,'” said Soccer Post owner Jacob Labovitz.The Green’s players and fans showed up to show their love for the home team.”Everyone up here is catching onto the Vermont Green, the UVM wave, and becoming a soccer fan,” said former Green FC player Ryan Combe. “It’s fantastic.”They also got a chance to spar with one of the greats.”I was there,” said former U.S. women’s national champion Sam Mewis. “I was at the Vermont Green game this weekend. I was so excited to be there.”Mewis moved to Burlington a few years ago. She has been entranced by how the sport has evolved in Vermont.”I heard the tickets sold out immediately. I had friends asking me for tickets and I was like, I can’t even help. It’s so exciting and I think the community and the people here are hungry to see the game, but also to feel a part of it,” Mewis said.A victory on Virtue Field for the Green has Vermont soccer fans itching for more. It just so happens that another team of champions is lacing up their cleats.Rob Dow led the UVM men’s team to win its first-ever soccer national championship last year. Since the Green’s win on Saturday, the demand for his team’s season tickets has skyrocketed.”I’ve never felt like the 2024 UVM season ever finished. It’s been one thing after the other. Then, we head onto an undefeated Vermont Green season, then on Monday, we have already sold over 1,000 tickets,” Dow said. Dow and the team are training at Jay Peak this week. He believes it is going to be the hardest season yet to earn back the title that turned the Catamounts into champions.”We’re going to need you as our 12th man,” Dow said. “Come to our opening game on Aug. 21.”Tickets can be found online.
