The University of Vermont women’s soccer team is still searching for their first win after the team’s first three games of the season. The Catamounts fell to 0-1-2 on the young season after a 1-0 shutout loss to the Yale University Bulldogs in their 2025 home opener. Yale scored within the first three minutes of the contest after a quick goal by JoJo DeNegri, which nailed the top right of the net for the game’s only goal.Vermont opted to switch to from Kylee Carafoli to Vanessa Smith in the second half and she did not disappoint. The sophomore goalie picked up two diving saves, including securing one on a penalty kick which kept the Catamounts close. However, it was the Yale defense and strong goaltending of Bulldog Junior netminder Kyla Holmes who overwhelmed their opponent. Holmes’ five saves helped to make sure no goals got behind her, helping her squad hold on to the win. Offense is something Vermont is trying to work on as the season progresses. Their first goal came against Merrimack College in their opening game of the season back on Thursday, August 14. The Catamounts have not scored since that game. “It’s definitely tough,” said Vermont women’s soccer head coach Kristi Huizenga. “We’re working to get some people back into the mix and healthy right now, so that’s certainly hurting us. We knew that graduating most of our goals was going to be an issue that we’re going to have to work through.”Vermont will look to bounce back in its next game on the road on Sunday, Aug. 24. It will face Fairfield University with a 4 p.m. kickoff.
