
A Colchester man is in police custody after a road rage encounter turned into a violent assault where another man’s eyes were gouged, according to the Winooski Police Department.Aaron Williams, 44, allegedly passed the victim’s car on Mallet’s Bay Avenue on Thursday, cut in front of them, and braked suddenly while still in traffic. Both drivers got out of their cars, and police say Williams punched the other person in the face before grabbing the victim’s face and driving his thumbs into their eyes.The victim told police he heard a pop, lost vision and fell to the ground. The assault continued after that, according to police. The victim was punched several more times, and there was another attempt to gouge his eyes.The victim was rushed to the University of Vermont Medical Center and underwent emergency surgery on their eyes. Police say they have not regained their vision and are still under medical care.Williams fled from the area before emergency services arrived. He was later arrested in Burlington. He’s charged with aggravated assault and maiming.
