Plattsburgh State University women’s soccer kicked off its season in dramatic fashion. After trailing for most of the first half, the Cardinals battled back from a 1-0 deficit against the Vermont State Castleton University to secure a 2-1 win in the game’s late stages. “I mean, it was a full team effort. It was a really hard-fought game from the beginning to the end,” said Plattsburgh State first-year forward Alana DeLaCruz. “We had to get it done … it was a great way to open our first home game with the fans here.” The Spartans struck first in this battle between schools on opposite sides of Lake Champlain. A goal scored by senior forward from Proctor, Vermont, Maggie McKearin gave Castleton the early 1-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the contest. Emma Ezzo, a senior goalkeeper from West Haven, Vermont, was posting a shutout for the Castleton defense for the first 55 minutes of play. However, Plattsburgh Kelly Licata found some space in the second half and fired a shot from beyond the box, which deflected off the hands of senior midfielder Kelly Licata and into the back of the net for the game-tying goal. With less than a minute to go, Plattsburgh had a corner kick opportunity which appeared to be their last chance to win the game. A ball placed right in front of the net gave DeLaCruz plenty of space to head the ball into the net for the eventual game-winning goal. “It meant everything to me,” DeLaCruz said. “I love these girls. To come on and step up for our first game, what a way to put us on top. It was a full team effort from start to finish.” Plattsburgh senior midfielder Alexis Patrick picked up both assists on each of the Cardinals’ goals in the second half. Plattsburgh will look to keep this momentum going into its next regular-season game. They will travel to play Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Sunday, Aug. 31, for a 3 p.m. kickoff. Castleton will look to bounce back in its next game on Wednesday, Sept. 3. The team will travel to Norwich University for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
