Another jam-packed weekend of volleyball has come and gone at Memorial Hall. The 21st annual Plattsburgh State University Cardinal Classic featured multiple schools from all over upstate New York making the trip to the Lake City for two days of competitive NCAA Division III women’s volleyball. Plattsburgh hosted Russell Sage College, Delhi State University (SUNY-Delhi), Saint Lawrence University, and Potsdam State University in this year’s edition of the tournament. The two SUNYAC rivals started the weekend off strong on Friday, Aug. 29. After Potsdam took the first two sets, Plattsburgh battled back to win the next three sets for a 3-2 opening season win. Russell Sage and Saint Lawrence battled in the next matchup, where it was the Saints who won three straight sets in a row after dropping the first set of play for a 3-1 victory. Saturday, Aug. 30, featured five different games of action with Memorial Hall divided into two different courts to run multiple games at a time. Plattsburgh once again tried to pull off a comeback, trailing 2-0, but a surge of offense from Saint Lawrence’s Berit Brecke in the fifth set helped the Saints hold on for the 3-2 win. It was a special victory for Saint Lawrence senior defensive specialist Lily Snide. The Plattsburgh, New York, native was thrilled to play a role in taking down her hometown college team. Snide tallied six digs and a service ace in the victory against the Cardinals. “It means a lot,” Snide said. “I could have stayed here (at Plattsburgh), but I really liked Saint Lawrence, and I wanted to play for Saint Lawrence. I still like Plattsburgh, but it feels great to have everyone watching me and just get that win.” Russell Sage then followed that match on a tear, winning in four sets against Potsdam, followed by a five-set victory against Plattsburgh. The Gators and Cardinals matchup was significant for both sides, as former Plattsburgh State volleyball player and Russell Sage volleyball head coach Rosilyn Cummings returned to her old home court. Cummings was inducted into the Plattsburgh State Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2024. “It’s really interesting to be back here,” Cummings said. “Honestly, I thought about it all week before I came. This is a place that I had my career in, and I love it here.” Saint Lawrence and Potsdam wrapped up the tournament with three-set sweeps against SUNY-Delhi. See the highlights and reaction from two of the games in the video above.
